About the Author

Sandra Cisneros was born December 20, 1954. She is a Mexican-American writer known for House on Mango Street. She worked as a teacher, counselor,college recruiter, and arts administrator. She established the Macondo writers workshop which provides socially conscious workshops for writers. She got her bachelor's degree from Loyola University Chicago, and then got her master's degree from the University of Iowa 2 years later. She has lived in the US and Mexico her entire life moving from one place to another with her family. She had six brothers and she was the only girl aside from her mother. She currently lives in Mexico, in San Miguel de Allende, a city in central Mexico. Her work as writer has been recognized by many in the writing community as one the more influential Chicana writers of her time. She is the first Chicana to have her books published by a mainstream publisher. Her legacy is great in the community as the founder of several writer's workshops and the awards that she has won such as the National Medal of Arts and the Nabokov Award, and the American book Award, there are many more but these are just some of them.
